Experience Authentic Japanese Tea Brewing with Our Unenameled Cast Iron Tetsubin
Discover the Tetsubin, a traditional Japanese unenameled cast iron kettle designed for boiling water, not for steeping tea. While commonly mistaken for tea infusers, Tetsubin is specifically crafted to enhance the taste of water. Made from pure iron without any coating, the water comes into direct contact with the Tetsubin, absorbing beneficial iron ions that enrich its flavor.
Boiling water in a Tetsubin offers an unparalleled taste experience, producing water that is noticeably smoother and subtly sweet. Additionally, it serves as an excellent source of dietary iron, promoting overall health. Many Japanese believe that consuming water boiled in a Tetsubin is a beneficial habit for well-being. Moreover, it is an indispensable tool for authentic Japanese tea ceremonies.
A well-maintained Tetsubin can last for generations, and antique Tetsubin have become highly prized treasures, fetching substantial sums at auctions.
Important Care Tips for Your Tetsubin:
- After a few days of use, you may notice red stains on the surface of the Tetsubin. This is normal and occurs due to the reaction of minerals remaining on the surface of a new kettle. Please refrain from touching, washing, or scrubbing these stains, as they will naturally disappear.
- After a few weeks of use (depending on your water hardness), white spots may appear on the lower surface of the Tetsubin. There is no cause for concern as these spots actively contribute to enhancing the water's taste and protecting your Tetsubin from rust. Well-aged and appreciated Tetsubin often exhibit a thick layer of white scales at the bottom.
- Thoroughly dry your Tetsubin after each use and remove the lid until it is completely dry to prevent rust. In case of accidental rusting, never use detergents or chemical cleaners. Instead, place approximately 10g/L of green tea leaves inside your Tetsubin, boil them for 10 minutes, and let them cool for a few hours. The antioxidants present in the tea leaves will react with the rust, causing it to darken.
- To maintain the shiny appearance of your Tetsubin, you can use a piece of tea-soaked cloth to polish the surface.
First-Time Usage of Your Tetsubin:
- Fill your Tetsubin with clean water, heat it, and rinse the interior.
- Pour out the water and repeat this process 3-4 times.
- While still warm, wipe the inside and outside of your Tetsubin with a dry cloth.
Things to Avoid:
- Never add cold water to a hot Tetsubin, as this can cause cracks or damage.
- Never heat your Tetsubin when it is empty or allow it to boil dry, as it may result in damage.
- Never scrub the inside or outside of your Tetsubin with a hard brush.
- Only clean and rinse the interior of your Tetsubin with a soft sponge. Avoid using detergents and dry the interior and exterior with a dry cloth while still warm.
- Do not leave water inside your Tetsubin. Store it in a cool, well-ventilated place.
- Avoid exposing your Tetsubin to salt or oil.
